Carlo Jacono – The Master of Illustrated Mystery
The elegance of mystery and the power of image
Carlo Jacono (1929 – 2000) was one of the greatest Italian illustrators of the twentieth century, universally recognized as the graphic face of crime and mystery .
For over forty years he has given shape and color to the covers that have marked the history of Italian publishing, illustrating novels for Mondadori, Garzanti, Longanesi, De Agostini and many other prestigious publishing houses.
His name is inextricably linked to the legendary “Il Giallo Mondadori” series, for which he created hundreds of covers with a realistic and theatrical style, characterised by an extraordinary ability to evoke tension, charm and drama in a single image.
With bold brushstrokes, vibrant colors and a clever use of light, Jacono managed to transform genre fiction into visual art , anticipating with cinematic sensitivity the noir and pulp atmospheres that would later become iconic.
