Jordi Bernet – The Master of Noir at the Table

The art and career of a giant of European comics

Born in Barcelona in 1944, Jordi Bernet is the son of an artist: he grew up in an environment immersed in comics thanks to his father, Miguel Bernet (aka "Jorge"), and his uncle, the scriptwriter Miguel Cussó. At just fifteen, he began publishing professionally, taking over his father's humorous series Doña Urraca , before choosing to evolve towards a more realistic and "adult" style.

His training led him to explore international markets – England, France, Germany – until the great leap in quality when in 1982 he took over the graphic direction of the series Torpedo 1936 (with screenwriter Enrique Sánchez Abulí) and won over the public with his dark, violent, ironic and graphically incisive style.

His style is characterized by a bold line, a masterful use of chiaroscuro, a taste for noir and dense visual narration, which make him an absolute reference in European comics.

Throughout his career, Bernet explores different genres and themes: from western to noir, from erotic to adventure, collaborating with screenwriters such as Antonio Segura ( Sarvan series), Carlos Trillo ( Clara de Noche series) and others.

Thanks to his contributions, Bernet has received numerous international awards, including the Alfred Prize for Best Foreign Album at the Angoulême Film Festival (1986) for Torpedo, and the Grand Prix at the Barcelona Comics Fair (1991) for his entire career.
