Description
This issue is one of the most memorable in Spider-Man history: “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” marks an emotional and narrative watershed for Peter Parker.
The story goes like this:
- Harry Osborn is in crisis: his addiction and personal problems weigh on him and his family. His father, Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin), is under financial and psychological pressure and is beginning to recover his memories of his Goblin identity.
- The Green Goblin kidnaps Gwen Stacy to hurt Peter Parker in the worst possible way. The climactic scene takes place on the Brooklyn Bridge: Gwen falls, and Spider-Man throws a web to save her. However, the fall is fatal: despite his best efforts, Gwen dies from a broken neck caused by the snap caused by the web's abrupt stoppage. Peter finds himself mourning his loss, vowing revenge and a pain that will scar him forever.
Why is it so important?
- It is one of the most tragic moments in superhero history: Gwen Stacy's death is not only symbolic, but changes the emotional maturity of Peter Parker's character.
- It generated a huge impact both among readers of the time and among modern fans: destined to spark discussion, to influence subsequent stories, to be a “must have”.
- The first catalyst for the transition from the Silver Age to the Bronze Age of comics, for its emotional charge and for demonstrating that not even a hero can avoid tragedy.
