Magnus (Roberto Raviola) – Master of comics

Roberto Raviola , known universally by the pseudonym Magnus (Bologna, 1939 – Castel del Rio, 1996), is a central figure in the history of Italian and European comics. An illustrator of extraordinary precision and a profoundly sensitive storyteller, Magnus successfully combined technical rigor, imagination, and visual culture in a unique language that still fascinates artists, scholars, and collectors today.

From origins to myth

Magnus' career began in the 1960s, in the fervent creative climate of Italian popular comics. Together with screenwriter Max Bunker (Luciano Secchi) , he created hugely successful series such as Kriminal , Satanik , and Alan Ford , in which his clear and dynamic style revolutionized the aesthetic of genre comics.
But his journey does not stop at commercial success: in search of a more authentic freedom of expression, Magnus dedicates himself to personal projects of great artistic ambition, such as The Unknown , a complex and disenchanted noir, and The 110 Pills , a refined erotic work inspired by oriental literature.

A craftsman of the sign

Magnus was an absolute perfectionist. Each panel was crafted with patience and precision, achieving an almost architectural balance between drawing and narrative.
The clear line , the obsessive attention to detail , the richness of the chiaroscuro and the ability to create powerful atmospheres with just a few strokes make him an author recognisable at first glance.
His approach was that of a Renaissance comics craftsman, capable of infusing each panel with an artistic and formal dignity that transcended the medium.

In the 1990s, Magnus tackled the great epic of Tex , creating the work that would become his final masterpiece: Tex – The Last Frontier , 223 panels created over seven years of work, completed shortly before his death. An artistic testament that encapsulates all his experience and his visual poetics.
